I am constantly amazed by how the most “ordinary” items can be engineered into high-end designer pieces. Today, I am going to show you how to rescue a simple paper placemat and a plastic mirror and transform them into a professional-grade wall sconce. By using a specialized liquid chrome technique and a solar-powered light source, we can create a shimmering, architectural showpiece that looks like a luxury boutique find for just a few dollars.

💡 Sandy’s Crafting Tips & Hacks
-
The Chrome Marker Prime: To get a flawless metallic finish, keep the cap on your chrome marker and shake it for at least 30 seconds to mix the paint. Press the felt tip down multiple times on a scrap surface to release the liquid chrome before starting on your frame.
-
Precision Over Spray Paint: Using a chrome marker on small mirror frames is much more efficient than spray paint. It allows you to work precisely into the grooves and ridges without the mess of aerosol or the need for extensive masking.
-
The Glue String Eraser: Once your hot glue has cooled, take a dry, soft-bristled paintbrush and simply twirl those pesky “spiderwebs” away instantly. This keeps your reflective chrome and glass surfaces sparkling like they came straight from a showroom.
-
Solar Placement: Since this sconce is solar-powered, hang it in a spot that receives natural light during the day. This allows the internal battery to charge and provide a beautiful, cordless glow automatically at night.
Instructions
-
Chrome the Mirror Frame: Start by transforming the black plastic mirror frame into a high-gloss metallic silver. Use your liquid chrome marker to paint the entire front and sides of the frame. Apply the paint in smooth, overlapping strokes for a mirror-like finish that mimics heavy metal.
-
Prepare the Light Source: Take your solar garden light and remove any black plastic stakes or stems that are not needed. We will be using the main light unit and the upper portion of the stick for this design.
-
Assemble the Sconce Unit: Apply hot glue to the clear plastic portion of the solar light as well as the lower rim of the solar stick. Press these glued areas directly onto the plastic frame of your chromec-finished mirror. Hold firmly for several seconds until the glue sets.
-
Create the Backdrop: Center your mirrored light assembly onto the black paper placemat. The intricate spiderweb design of the placemat serves as a sophisticated, lightweight backdrop that makes the chrome pop against your wall.
-
Mount and Illuminate: To hang your new showpiece, simply hang the top edge of the paper placemat onto a nail in the wall. Because the entire unit is ultra-lightweight, it is easy to adjust and requires no electrical wiring or heavy-duty mounting hardware.
