I love finding beauty in the most unexpected places, and today’s project is a perfect example of how a bit of imagination can turn household “trash” into a boutique showpiece. We are rescuing an empty shampoo bottle and upscaling it with metallic textures to create a stunning wall sconce that provides a beautiful, functional glow. It’s a fast, clever build that looks like a high-end designer find but only costs a few dollars to make.

💡 Sandy’s Favorite Crafting Tips & Hacks
- The “Invisible” Upcycle Secret: When you’re using plastic containers like shampoo bottles, always clean them thoroughly and remove all labels before starting. A clean surface ensures your adhesives bond permanently and prevents old branding from “ghosting” through your decorative layers.
- Precision Trimming: When wrapping a curved bottle with a flat placemat, you might find some overhang. Use a sharp pair of scissors to trim the excess flush with the bottle’s edge for a clean, professional finish.
- Adhesive Duo for Frames: While I used white glue for the diamond wrap backing, I always recommend my favorite trick for mounting the bottle assembly: apply hot glue to the top and bottom center of the frame for an immediate hold that keeps your project perfectly vertical while it sets.
- Zero-Waste Solar Hack: Don’t throw away the rest of your solar light! We only need the plastic stick for this build to act as a decorative stem, but the solar unit itself can be saved for a future garden project.
Instructions
- Prepare the Vessel: Clean your empty shampoo bottle and use a box cutter to carefully remove the entire bottom. This creates the main opening for your light source.
- Apply the Facade: Measure and cut a section of your mosaic placemat to fit the circumference of the bottle. Adhere it to the outer surface using hot glue and trim any excess from the ends.
- Build the Decorative Stem: Remove the plastic stick from a solar stake light. Apply hot glue to one end and insert it about half an inch into the smaller neck opening of the shampoo bottle.
- Add the Boutique Bling: Glue a string of silver beaded necklace around the bottle’s neck to hide the joint. Insert a clear acrylic diamond gem into the bottom end of the solar stick and finish the tip with another ring of silver beads.
- Install the Light: Secure your battery-operated LED hanging lamp into the large bottom opening of the bottle using hot glue to ensure it is affixed firmly.
- Create the Mirrored Backdrop: Disassemble your 4×6 picture frame and remove the kickstand leg from the cardboard backing. Use white glue to adhere a sheet of rhinestone diamond wrap to the cardboard, let it dry for 20 minutes, and reinsert it into the frame.
- Final Assembly: Apply hot glue to the front top and bottom center of the prepared frame. Press the shampoo bottle assembly vertically onto the frame and hold it until the glue sets.
