I found this plain white wire hanging basket at the Dollar Tree and immediately saw its potential to be a high-end decor piece. Sometimes the simplest items just need a little bit of color and texture to completely change their look. Today, I’m going to show you how I used the handles from silver plastic spoons and a few shimmering gems to create a stunning silver basket that looks beautiful on my living room entryway table for holding keys and knickknacks.

💡 Sandy’s Favorite Crafting Tips & Hacks
-
Zero-Waste Spoon Hack: When you break the round part of the spoon off for this project, don’t throw it away! I always save those pieces for future projects where I might need a mirrored or textured detail.
-
Custom Color Foundation: If your basket comes in a color like white, hand-painting it with a metallic gray before you start gluing ensures that the frame matches your silver embellishments perfectly.
-
Nested Design Trick: To make the spoon handles fit nicely together, try placing your second row in the reverse position of the first. It creates a much more cohesive and professional pattern.
-
Strategic Gluing: For a secure hold on a wire frame, apply a dollop of glue to both ends of the spoon arm. This ensures it adheres tightly to the wire and won’t shift over time.
Instructions
-
Prepare the Embellishments: Open your silver plastic spoons and break the round bowl part away from the handle (arm). You’ll need enough to cover the length of your specific basket.
-
Strip the Frame: Remove the hanging handles from both ends of your wire basket so you’re left with just the wire container.
-
Paint the Basket: Hand-paint the wire frame with silver metallic gray paint to match the silver spoons.
-
Map Out Your Pattern: Test your design before you start gluing. I found that two rows of spoon arms down the length of the basket look best, with the second row placed in the reverse position to fill the gaps.
-
Secure the Arms: Use your hot glue gun to apply glue to both ends of a spoon arm, then press it directly onto the wire frame. Repeat this until the entire basket is covered.
-
Add the Finishing Sparkle: Glue your flat oval crystal gems into the spaces where the spoon arms meet. This adds that final touch of glam and completes the transformation.
