I’ve always loved how a simple rectangular charger plate can be the foundation for something truly spectacular. Whether I’m browsing my local Dollar Tree, checking out Dollarama in Canada, or popping into a Pound Store in the UK, I’m always hunting for those versatile pieces that can be reimagined. Recently, I’ve been busy tidying up my craft studio—glitter gets everywhere, so I’ve been using a new wet-dry vacuum to keep the floors sparkling—and it inspired me to create something that isn’t just beautiful, but functional too. I found that adding a crystal doorknob to a mirrored charger plate makes the perfect hook for a jacket in a mudroom, and with a few heavy-duty shears and some garden fencing, it transforms into a glowing wall sconce that looks like a high-end boutique find.

💡Scaling Note: The quantity of pearl beads and the size of your window film will depend on the number of sconces you choose to create and the dimensions of your charger plates.

  • Rectangular charger plates (Any colour, as we will use the back).
  • Self-adhesive silver metallic pearl beads.
  • Black frame mirror with a crystal doorknob.
  • Plastic garden fence (For the sconce design).
  • Nylon cable ties (Black).
  • Cardboard backing (from a standard picture frame).
  • Rechargeable light bulb.
  • Clear plastic chopping mat.
  • Window privacy film (Translucent or patterned).
  • Black webbing place mat.

Tools

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks.
  • Fix-All or E6000 industrial adhesive.
  • Heavy-duty shears (Crescent WIS shears recommended).
  • Precision scissors.

💡Sandy’s Crafting Tips & Hacks

  • The Cable Tie Chain Technique: If your cable ties are too short to reach around the charger plate, simply thread several together to create one long, secure strap. This provides a rock-solid hold for heavier elements like garden fencing.
  • The Heavy-Duty Shears Secret: Don’t struggle with regular scissors when cutting hard plastic garden fencing. Using industrial-strength shears prevents jagged edges and saves your hands from unnecessary strain.
  • The Upcycled Hanger Shortcut: Instead of buying expensive hardware, cut the hanging hook out of the cardboard backing of a discarded picture frame. Secure it with a mix of Fix-All and hot glue for a sturdy, immediate bond.
  • The Repositionable Film Trick: Window privacy film is often self-adhesive but forgiving. If you don’t get the placement perfect on your chopping mat the first time, you can easily peel it back and reapply it for a bubble-free finish.
  • The Contrast Principle: When working with the black backside of a charger plate, always use high-contrast embellishments like silver or white pearl beads. This makes the design “pop” and gives it that high-end, designer look.

Instructions

  1. Embellish the border of the charger plate’s reverse side by applying rows of self-adhesive silver metallic pearl beads.
  2. Decorate the frame of your doorknob mirror with matching beads and adhere it to the centre of the charger plate using a combination of industrial adhesive and hot glue.
  3. Trim the legs off a plastic garden fence using heavy-duty shears and cut the fence to fit the width of your charger plate.
  4. Secure the fence piece over the front of the mirror by looping a chain of cable ties around the entire unit and tightening them at the back.
  5. Create a custom hanger by cutting a hook from a cardboard frame backing and gluing it to the top of the charger plate.
  6. Complete the look by hanging a rechargeable light bulb from the crystal doorknob and powering it on to see the light glow through the textured fence.
