Ever looked at a plain old shipping container and wondered if it could actually become a high-end piece of furniture? (And ideally, without spending a fortune?)
I definitely have! There’s something incredibly satisfying about taking a “beat-up” cardboard box and rescuing it from the recycling bin to create something beautiful for your home. Today, I’m going to show you how to give an ordinary delivery box a total makeover. We’re upscaling it into a multi-functional storage pedestal—perfect for displaying your favorite flowers while doubling as a secret spot for your spare blankets and pillows.

💡Sandy’s Crafting Tips & Hacks

  • The Secret Storage Hack: I love pieces that work hard for my space! This pedestal is designed with a removable lid made from a photo frame, allowing you to hide away clutter like remotes or spare linens while the top serves as a glamorous display for your favorite flowers.

  • The Structural Integrity Hack: If your cardboard feels a bit flimsy, don’t worry. I recommend adhering extra strips of scrap wood or thick cardboard panels to the interior corners; this ensures the unit is rock-solid and can easily support the weight of a heavy glass vase on top.

  • The Custom Leg Hack: To achieve a high-end boutique height, we’re going to create “crystal” feet by hot-gluing large glass gems into silver ornament caps. This gives the pedestal a “weighted” professional feel that looks like expensive designer hardware.

  • The Permanent Bonding Hack: For functional furniture pieces, I always recommend my “adhesive duo.” Use a combination of Gorilla wood glue or Fix-All for the primary long-term bond and supplement with hot glue for an immediate hold while you work.

  • The Glue String Removal Hack: Don’t let messy “spiderwebs” ruin your reflective finish! Once the glue has cooled, take a dry paintbrush with soft bristles and simply twirl those pesky strings away for a flawless boutique shine.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Foundation: To get started, we’re going to get our box ready. We’ll begin by cleaning the cardboard and removing any old tape or top flaps. Then, apply a base coat of white primer to the exterior; this is a step you don’t want to skip, as it prevents any original branding or bright colors from “ghosting” through your mirrors later.

  2. Line the Interior: Next, let’s add some interior luxury. We’re going to measure and adhere our silver glitter faux leather fabric to the inside walls and floor of the box. I suggest using wood glue and smoothing it out with a foam brush to ensure the fabric sits perfectly flat, giving the interior that expensive “keepsake chest” feel.

  3. Construct the Lid: Now it’s time to build our functional top. We’ll take our silver photo frame, embellish it with rhinestone trim, and secure it to the top of our box structure. Make sure it aligns perfectly so that when the lid is closed, it provides a level surface to hold a decorative vase.

  4. Mirror the Facade: Now for the fun part: let’s add that high-gloss shimmer. We’re going to bond our hexagon-framed mirrors to all four exterior sides of the box using a strong permanent adhesive. I recommend centering them properly to cover as much of the cardboard surface as possible for a seamless look.

  5. Bling the Seams: Next, we’ll add our signature detailing. We’re going to cover all remaining exposed cardboard edges and any gaps between the mirrors with silver rhinestone and real glass trim. This hides our mechanics and gives the pedestal a flawless, boutique store finish.

  6. Elevate and Polish: The last thing to do is give our pedestal some height. We’ll turn the unit over and bond our custom crystal legs firmly to each of the four corners. To finish, give all the glass surfaces a good clean, and don’t forget to use your dry paintbrush trick to sweep away any stray fingerprints or glue strings for a professional shine.
