Our home gets a lot of deliveries, and now we also keep a lot of our shipping boxes and empty packaging! Most people see a packaging container or a diaper box as recycling, but I see it as a high-end designer piece of material. This project is one of my favorites because it uses a unique “petal” texture technique to turn basic cardboard into a stunning floor vase that looks like it belongs in a professional home staging gallery.

By layering silver spoon handles in a beautiful overlapping pattern, I’ve created a metallic, high-end looking storage solution that doubles as a piece of beautiful home decor. Materials

Tall, slim cardboard box (shipping or diaper box)
Silver plastic spoons (multiple 24-packs)
White primer or white acrylic paint
Silver metallic paint marker (Liquid Chrome)
Silver rhinestone ribbon and silver beaded necklace
Fix-All or E6000 adhesive and hot glue gun

💡Sandy’s Crafting Tips & Hacks

The Base Priming Hack: Before you start adding your texture, paint that branded cardboard box white. This is a crucial step! It prevents the original logos or dark brown cardboard from “ghosting” through the tiny gaps in your spoon handles, ensuring a clean boutique finish.
The Glue String Removal Hack: Keep those metallic surfaces looking showroom-ready! Once the glue has cooled, use a dry, soft-bristled paintbrush to whisk away any hot glue “webs” for a professional, polished shine.
The Permanent Bonding Hack: Since this is a large, floor-standing piece, you want it to be durable. Always use a mix of Fix-All or E6000 for that permanent, professional bond, and use hot glue to keep the “petals” in place while the stronger adhesive sets.
The Zero-Waste Spoon Hack: When you snap the round heads off the spoons, don’t toss them! Save those pieces in a bin; they are perfect for future “crystal cluster” designs or sunburst mirrors.
The Alignment Guide Hack: Precision is key for this look. Use a ruler to mark vertical lines on your box before you start. This ensures your columns of spoon handles stay pin-straight from the floor all the way to the top.

Instructions

Prep the Box: Remove any tape or labels. Fold the top flaps inward and glue them down to the interior walls; this creates a sturdy, double-walled rim that can handle the weight of your decorations.
Prime for Perfection: Coat the entire exterior of the box with white paint. This gives you a neutral foundation so the cardboard color doesn’t peek through your silver texture.
Apply the Spoon Embellishments: Use your hands/fingers to snap the heads off your silver plastic spoons. We are using the long, sleek handles as our “petals” for this design.
Layer the Texture: Start at the base of the box and adhere the spoon handles vertically. Layer them in slightly overlapping rows as you work your way up to the top rim to create that seamless, metallic texture.
The Designer Finish: Trim the top opening and cover any visible glue seams with your silver beaded necklace or rhinestone ribbon. Give the whole vase a quick polish for a flawless, boutique-worthy shine!
