I’ll be the first to admit that I have a serious pillow obsession, but I definitely don’t have the budget to match my “designer” taste. I was walking through the aisles at the Dollar Tree the other day and realized that with a little creative thinking, we can actually turn basic table mats and even those soft cloths from the auto section into the most gorgeous cushions. Today, I’m showing you five different ways to get that high-end look for about two dollars a piece, and the best part is we aren’t touching a sewing machine. These are quick, easy, and honestly look like they came straight out of a boutique.

💡 Sandy’s Crafting Tips & Hacks

  • The “Inside-Out” Seam: For a professional, hidden seam, glue your fabrics together with the “good” sides facing each other. Once the glue is cool, flip the cover inside out. The seams will stay strong, and your pillow will look like it was professionally stitched.

  • Temperature Matters: If your glue isn’t sticking to fabric, it’s likely your glue gun temperature. Invest in a high-heat gun rather than a craft-grade version; the hotter glue penetrates the fabric fibers for a permanent, “wash-proof” bond.

  • The Velcro Closure: Instead of gluing your pillow shut, apply self-adhesive Velcro strips to the opening. This allows you to remove the cover whenever it needs a wash, extending the life of your custom decor.

  • Repurposing Old Fill: Don’t buy expensive pillow forms. Use these covers to refresh old, flat, or outdated cushions you already have around the house.

Instructions

1. The Zigzag Textured Cushion

  1. Alignment: Lay a thick zigzag table mat flat. Overlay a microfiber cloth on top, lining up the edges.

  2. Glue the Perimeter: Fold down a 1/2-inch hem of the microfiber cloth and hot glue it to the mat. Repeat on two more sides (three total), leaving one short end open.

  3. The Closure: Apply a strip of Velcro tape to the inside of both open flaps.

  4. Finish: Insert your cushion and seal the Velcro. You now have a double-sided pillow with a textured zigzag side and a soft white side.

2. The Silky Contrast Pillow

  1. Hemming: Since some mats are smaller than the microfiber cloth, fold over a larger section of the cloth to match the mat’s dimensions.

  2. Bonding: Hot glue three sides as before.

  3. The Reveal: Add Velcro to the opening and stuff with a pillow form for a sleek, silky-to-soft contrast look.

3. The “Inside-Out” Microfiber Flip

  1. Reverse Layering: Place the microfiber cloth on top of a pillowcase with the “good” sides facing each other.

  2. Seaming: Glue three sides firmly.

  3. The Flip: Carefully turn the cover inside out to reveal a clean, sharp seam.

  4. Insert: Stuff the pillow and use the excess pillowcase fabric to create a clean-folded flap closure.

4. The Geometric Cotton Throw

  1. Sizing: Lay a square-patterned cotton pillowcase out. Match it with a microfiber cloth.

  2. Glue: Run a line of high-heat glue along three edges to bond the cotton to the soft microfiber.

  3. Stuffing: Slide in your fill and seal the final edge with Velcro or a hidden fold.

5. The Grey Patterned Fold-Over

  1. Layout: Use a thin cotton pillowcase with a white and grey pattern.

  2. Assembly: Adhere to the microfiber cloth using the three-sided glue method.

  3. The Flap Hack: For this version, use the natural extra fabric at the opening of the pillowcase to create a deep “envelope” style fold-over that keeps the pillow tucked neatly inside.
