💡Sandy’s Crafting Tips & Hacks
-
The Invisible Reflection Hack: Adhering a frameless mirror to the back of a framed mirror creates a double-sided reflection inside your box, giving it a much more expensive, professional feel.
-
The Permanent Bonding Hack: For functional items like a jewelry box, always use a combination of Fix-All or E6000 for long-term durability and supplement it with hot glue for an immediate hold while the stronger adhesive cures.
-
The Glue String Removal Hack: Keep your mirrors and metallic surfaces sparkling by using a dry paintbrush with soft bristles to sweep away pesky hot glue webs once the glue has cooled.
-
Camouflage Hack: If your mini hinges or mirror tabs are bronze or black, you don’t need to buy new ones. Use a silver metallic marker to color the hardware so it blends seamlessly with the glam silver theme.Use a silver metallic paint marker to color the hinges and mirror tabs so they blend seamlessly with the chrome finish of the frames.
Instructions
1. Prepare the Lid: Remove the mirror from one hexagon frame. Apply Fix-All to the back of a second, intact framed mirror and press the loose mirror onto it, back-to-back. Use a silver marker to paint the holding tabs so they match the frame.
2. Install the Hinges: Stand two framed mirrors side-by-side. Mark the holes for three hinges along one of the hexagon’s flat edges. Use a small amount of hot glue to temporarily hold the hinges in place, then secure them permanently with your mini electric screwdriver and screws.
3. Add the Crystal Feet: Flip the box over. Position four crystal knobs on the bottom mirror to form a stable base. Secure them with Fix-All or E6000. Using four instead of six keeps the project budget-friendly while providing plenty of stability.
4. Create the Custom Handle: Take a silver ornament cap and trim the base until it sits flat. Glue a pointed diamond gem into the top opening. Once set, glue this handmade “crystal” knob to the front of the lid, directly opposite the hinges.
5. Frame with Rhinestones: Apply self-adhesive rhinestone ribbon around the top frame of the box. Cut the ribbon at an angle at each corner to ensure the edges meet in a clean, professional-looking miter joint.
6. Bling the Side Panels: Use tacky glue to align eight square gems along each of the six side panels. If the gems don’t cover the entire length of the side, use small strips of rhinestone ribbon to fill the gaps at the ends for a finished look.
